The sudden death of respected barrister Joseph MacKenzie Rogers shocked the community in 1908. The announcement of his passing was greeted with the immediate lowering of the flag flying over the Town Hall.

Born and educated in Belleville Ontario he moved to Perth to be part of the law firm of Edward Elliot. When Elliot.became a judge, Rogers had continued the practice alone. In 1894 when he was joined by Mr. J.A.Stewart. Rogers was recognized for his service by being name King's Council (KC) by the Government of Ontario.

He served two terms as Mayor, was active on the School Board. He would serve as Reeve and championed the causes of good roads throughout his tenure on the County Council. "Rogers Road" in Perth was named in his honour.

The family plot contains his remains beside his wife, Caroline Webster, and their four children: Arthur, Carroll, Webster, and Walter.

You are now going to walk across the cemetery to the "West Avenue".

One option is to take the path immediately behind the Rogers memorial, leading back into the heart of the cemetery. This was known as Spruce Avenue on the original map and if you choose this path you will soon come up on the back of the Marks family memorial.

The other options are to walk either on Hemlock Avenue (to the south) or Pine Avenue (to the north). If you choose either of these paths you will have to follow the path as it curves back into the cemetery to find the Marks memorial.

The "Next Stop" will highlight some of the memorials found in the middle (H) section. When the first lots were balloted no lots were selected in this area. It is where most of the current interments are taking place although some are of historic importance.
