Our Services
Elmwood Cemetery is a full-service, licensed cemetery proudly serving families with compassion, professionalism, and respect. Regulated under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA) and overseen by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO), we are committed to providing meaningful options for final disposition, memorialization, and long-term care.
Rooted in over 150 years of heritage, we understand that every life is unique and every family's needs are different. That's why we offer a range of respectful services designed to honour your loved ones in the way that feels right for you—including traditional burials, cremation interments, green burials, and even pet interments for cherished animal companions.
Whether you're planning ahead or navigating an immediate need, our caring team is here to guide you through your choices with understanding and support. All services are provided in accordance with the laws of Ontario, supported by a properly issued interment rights certificate, and where applicable, scattering rights.
At Elmwood Cemetery, we honour life in all its forms and preserve the stories that matter most to our community.

Traditional Ground Burial
We offer full-casket interment (ground burial) in well-maintained cemetery plots. When you purchase interment rights for a plot, you acquire the right to direct the interment of human remains in that lot under BAO-compliant processes.
-
Full-casket burial in designated plots
-
Use of a burial vault is optional
-
Professionally maintained grounds with respectful landscaping
-
Year-round interment and visitation, subject to seasonal weather conditions
Cremations
We provide several dignified options for the interment of cremated remains. These include:
-
In-ground interment in a grave
-
Use of a cremation vault is optional
-
Placement of cremated remains in one of the Cemetery's columbariums
-
Memorialization via bronze plaques or markers, subject to cemetery by-laws
If you have any questions, we are available to answer them.

Natural Burial
Elmwood Cemetery offers natural burial, an eco-conscious form of interment that aligns with environmentally sensitive practices while still operating within Ontario’s regulatory framework.
Natural burial includes:
-
Interment without embalming
-
Use of biodegradable caskets free of metal components
-
Use of burial shrouds is permitted, but only if the remains are fully supported, usually on a natural device that fully supports the remains
-
Burial depth and methods that support natural decomposition (as practiced in natural burial grounds)
-
A designated natural burial area that complements our heritage landscaping
Natural burial maintains the registry, care, and perpetual maintenance expected in our licensed cemetery.
Scattering Grounds
In the future, Elmwood Cemetery is planning a designated scattering ground for the respectful scattering of cremated remains, subject to BAO-recognized by-laws and approval.
As our plans develop, we are looking for ways for families to choose a permanent memorial element—such as a plaque, tree, or landscape feature—to commemorate their loved one in this special space.

Companion Interment
In recognition of the meaningful bonds between people and their companion animals, Elmwood Cemetery permits companion interment in conjunction with a human burial or cremation right, consistent with our cemetery by-laws and Ontario law.
