For generations Thomas Hicks was a respected carriage builder and foundry owner with a business and residence on North Street. His was one of many high quality foundries that were originally located "just outside" the original town lines for Perth.
Why "just outside?" Contemporary Perth has expanded to include North Street within essentially it's downtown, but at the time, North Street marked the boundary of the town. Every item that entered the community was weighed and taxes had to be paid. (A replica of the weigh scale can still be see on the basin downtown as part of the Mammoth Cheese exhibit.) Foundries and other businesses could locate on the other side of North Street and their necessary materials could bypass the town limits thus avoiding these additional costs.
His wife, Elizabeth James (1839-1917), was also from one of Perth's foundry families. Also memorialized here are some of their nine children: Mary Etna Hicks (1863-1869), Anna M. Hicks (1867-1951), Edith E. Hicks (1870-1958), Minnie E. Hicks (1872-1951), William H. Hicks (1874-1939), Thomas N. Hicks (1876-1944) and Ernest James Hicks (1880-1881).
